Poker is a card game played by two or more players. It consists of a series of rounds of betting, with each player revealing cards to their opponents until one player has the best five-card hand. The smallest tournaments are called locals or weeklies and are often held in card rooms, bars, community centers, and other venues. They have low cost to enter, are fast-paced, and provide new players an opportunity to experience the competitive nature of the game. These tournaments are the foundation for advancing to higher-level competitions.
In the simplest form of the game, each player is dealt seven cards. The player with the highest five-card hand wins the pot. During each round of betting, a player must place enough chips in the pot (representing money) to match or exceed the amount placed in by the active players before him. The player who makes the first bet is designated the dealer for the round, although some variants allow non-players to take on this role.
