Poker is a card game requiring skill and luck, played in cash games or tournament play. It is also a game of incomplete information, where players bet with chips that they do not have (they are “holding” them). Each player has two cards and five community cards and aims to make the best 5 card hand. The player with the highest ranked hand wins the pot – all of the chips bet during that hand.<\/p>\n

Some variants of the game use wild cards (dueces, one-eyed jacks etc) while others have fixed rank cards. In the latter, the hands are compared using the ranks of the first pair and then the rank of the remaining unmatched cards (this breaks ties).<\/p>\n

The rules of poker vary between different types, but the aim is to raise the stake as high as possible over a short number of betting intervals. When the stake has reached a level where it is unlikely that anyone will call, the raising of bets is usually stopped.<\/p>\n

Poker is a game of chance, but it can be made more skillful by learning about the strategy, probability, psychology and mathematics involved in making good decisions. It is also a game of social interaction, where players try to read each other’s actions, including the use of tells (unconscious habits displayed by players during gameplay that reveal information about their hands).
